Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov held a meeting of the board of the Russian Foreign Ministry on February 14, dedicated to the Russian chairmanship in the CIS in 2017.
During the discussion, the board gave consideration to the concrete steps to implement Chairmanship concept, approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Board stressed that the main task of the Russian chairmanship should be improving of the CIS, enhancing of the practical results of its operations for the member countries, the strengthening of the authority of the Commonwealth on the global stage. Also, the basic directions of the further work on the development of integration processes in the post-Soviet space were determined, on the increase of cooperation in a wide range of areas, including regional security, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres, health care, science and education, physical education and sports. Particular attention was paid to events on the declared in 2017 in the CIS “Year of the Family”.
The Board noted that the positive dynamics of the development of foreign relations with most of the CIS states was observed. At the same time, alignment of CIS relations with its neighbors in the region, non-regional powers and organizations must be based on respect for the interests of the Commonwealth countries and the decisions taken in the CIS.
As the result, the board meeting adopted a resolution.
