Essay Competition dedicated to the anniversary of A. Dobrynin

The National Youth Council of Russia, with the support of the Foreign Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, announces an Essay Competition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Anatoly Dobrynin — one of the greatest diplomats of the 20th century.

Anatoly is a legendary diplomat who, during the Caribbean crisis, miraculously saved the world from nuclear war. On the night of October 27-28, 1962, he held a secret meeting with Robert Kennedy, the brother of United States President, and during this conversation it was decided to dismantle Soviet missiles in Cuba in exchange for dismantling American missiles in Turkey. Dobrynin worked as an Ambassador of the Soviet Union to the United States of America, for 25 years, several times his mission was extended at the request of the American side. Anatoly Dobrynin — Honored Worker of the Diplomatic Service of the Russian Federation, Hero of Socialist Labor, Honorary Doctor of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, was awarded the Order of Honor for the great contribution to the implementation of the foreign policy of the Russian Federation and many years of diplomatic service.

In memory of this great man, who would have turned a hundred years old on November 16, 2019, the National Youth Council of Russia, with the support of the Foreign Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, is initiating the Essay Competition on the theme “The Contribution of Dobrynin’s Diplomacy to the Development of Russian-American Dialogue”.

The aim of the Competition is to popularize the history of Russian diplomacy among the younger generation.

Students and graduates of the schools’ senior classes and universities of Russia are invited to participate in the competition. The work size should not exceed 3000 characters with spaces (Times New Roman font, 14 font size, 1.5 line spacing). Works are provided in “Word” format to e-mail: pressa@youthrussia.ru. In the email-letter body, please indicate your contact information – full name, education experience and valid phone number.

Competitive work should contain an analytical part and the author’s own position on the topic covered.

Essay evaluation criteria:

—  compliance of the work content with the stated topic;

—  full disclosure of the topic, ideas based on the relevant concepts, theoretical propositions, conclusions;

—  relevance, novelty, artistic expression;

—  independence of conclusions, the logic of presentation, the quality of the arguments given;

—  literacy, text compliance with style and grammatical standards of the Russian language;

—  the quality of text formatting.

Application deadline — August 1.

A Contest Commission will be created to evaluate the essay and determine the winners, it will include diplomats, representatives of the National Youth Council of Russia, public organizations and government bodies.

The results of the Competition will be announced in October. The prize winners will receive memorable gifts from the National Youth Council of Russia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, as well as a unique opportunity to take part in a meeting with the Director of the Foreign Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Oleg Stepanov.
